Why Mandurah Eats Antennas — Salt, Sand & Sixty Kilometres from the Tower

Coastal antenna installation MandurahMandurah's a different beast to metro Perth when it comes to TV reception. You're sixty-odd kilometres from the Bickley transmitter, sitting on the coast where salt air chews through standard antenna fittings in two to three years. I reckon half the jobs I do down here are replacing antennas that look perfectly fine from the ground but are completely shot at the connections. The coastal environment doesn't care how much you paid for it — if the fittings aren't marine-grade stainless, they're on borrowed time.

A bloke in Halls Head called me last month because he'd lost SBS and Channel 10 completely. His antenna was only four years old but the coax connector on the mast had corroded green. Twenty-minute fix — new weatherproof connector and a silicone seal — and he was back to full channels. That's the kind of thing that catches people out down here.

Canal Estates — The Reflection Problem

The canal developments through Mandurah and Dawesville create a signal issue you won't find anywhere else in Perth. Water reflects TV signals, and when you've got canals on both sides of your house, you can get multipath interference — the signal bouncing off the water surface and arriving at your antenna twice, slightly out of sync. That causes ghosting and pixelation that looks like a weak signal but actually isn't. The fix is a more directional antenna that rejects the reflected signal, pointed precisely at Bickley. Takes a bit more care during installation but solves it permanently.

Lakelands & Madora Bay — New Build Signal Gaps

The new estates south of town keep expanding faster than the infrastructure. I've done dozens of jobs in Lakelands where the builder stuck the cheapest antenna on the roof and called it done. Problem is, at this distance from the transmitter, a budget antenna just doesn't cut it. You need a proper phased-array with enough gain to pull in a clean signal at sixty kilometres. The difference between a thirty-dollar antenna and a hundred-dollar one is the difference between three watchable channels and all of them.

If you're in a newer Mandurah home and your TV cuts out during weather or at certain times of day, it's almost certainly the antenna or the cabling — not your TV. The builders use the minimum spec gear because it technically works on a clear day. Give us a call and we'll upgrade it properly with marine-grade gear that'll last the distance.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Down in Mandurah you're a long way from the Bickley transmitter, so signal strength matters more than it does closer to Perth. Add salt corrosion eating your connections and Norfolk Pines blocking line-of-sight, and pixelating is pretty common. Nine times out of ten it's fixable with a higher-gain antenna, fresh marine-grade connectors, or sometimes just re-aiming the existing dish. Dave will bring a signal meter, find the actual cause, and give you a straight answer before touching anything.
Mandurah's had a couple of 5G towers go up recently and yeah, they can cause interference — especially on older antennas that pick up a wider frequency range than they need to. We carry 4G/5G rejection filters in the van. If your picture started playing up around the time a new tower went in near you, that's probably the culprit. A filter takes about ten minutes to install and costs bugger all compared to replacing the whole setup.
Mandurah jobs tend to run a bit more than metro Perth because we often need marine-grade hardware — stainless fittings, weatherproof connectors, better cabling. A standard repair might be $149-$250, a new install $289-$450 depending on roof style and mast height. Canal homes sometimes need extra waterproofing. Dave quotes everything upfront before he starts — you'll know the exact cost before any work happens. No hidden call-out fees, no surprises on the invoice.
Mandurah's a decent drive from our base so same-day depends on timing. Ring before 10am and we can usually get Dave down there that afternoon. Halls Head, Meadow Springs, Falcon, Erskine — all within the same run so we try to batch jobs in the area. If it's urgent and you've got no TV at all, let us know and we'll shuffle things around. Weekend jobs are possible too if you're stuck.
We stand behind our work. All our antenna installations come with a warranty on the antenna itself and our workmanship. If you have any issues after the installation, just give us a call and we'll sort it out for you. We're not happy until you're happy, and we're committed to providing top-notch service.
